We have often agreed with the statement that the rarest of Tourmaline’s many hues must be, in fact, a colorless stone. Having spent some time with this gem, we are now inclined to think that an attractive, light tone brown must certainly be equally unusual. We have certainly had more colorless Tourmalines than we have this color - this is the only stone we have ever seen in this particular color. We tried telling ourselves it must be a very, very desaturated purple (as some browns are), but we just can’t see it. It appears to actually be a gem Tourmaline that could pass for an alpine Smoky Quartz. From a long assembled collection we are working through, the original owner must certainly have felt the same about this one - the cutting is old and superb, of a quality we would probably not see today. The beguiling nature of a brown Tourmaline may not be for everyone, but this is one we have grown to appreciate immensely.
