Vesuvianite (also known as Idocrase) is a reasonably scarce silicate mineral named for its type locality on Mount Vesuvius. This unique example of gem Vesuvianite is acutally from a US locale - a deposit in Butte Co., California. What makes stones from this find so unique is the occasional presence of Chromite inclusions which appear as dark green 'spots'. Have a look at the photo - this makes for an interesting color contrast. Additionally, as the Chromite appears to 'dissolve' into the surrounding yellowish-green Vesuvianite you get a small zone that appears almost blue in color from the - really fascinating. Nicely done cab with a great polish and quite scarce - the largest and best we have seen from here.
