Staurolite has the unusual distinction of being an extremely rare faceted gem as well a very well known (dare we say common!) mineral specimen. The name derives from the mineral's habit of twinning into specimens that resemble crosses - indeed, these are often called 'fairy stones' and rock and mineral shows.
Staurolite is nearly always massive and gem grade areas in any of the crystals are essentially non-existent. This superb faceted example is far and away the largest gem we have ever come across. In fact, typical stones tend to be in the 0.10-0.20 ct. weight range. Of course, quite dark in tone but still distinctly red and, remarkably, entirely clean. A totally museum grade example of the species, complete with a GIA cert.
