An extremely large and fine example of an extremely rare faceted species that was profiled in the lab notes section of GIA’s Gems & Gemology in the Fall 2019 issue. Meaning ‘snow stone’ in Greek, the name reflects the white to colorless nature of the mineral. Fully transparent material is exceptionally rare and this is the by far the largest we have had, or seen for that matter. It is a collector’s gem with a hardness of just 3 1/2 on the Moh’s scale!
