Sinhalite was only recognized as a gem species in 1952 - prior to that it had been assumed to be a brownish to yellowish variety of peridot. It was found not to be a member of the olivine group, but a separate borate species. The name derives from the sanskrit word for Sri Lanka, the primary locality of gem specimens. This is a stunning example of Sinhalite at it's finest - the color is an attractive golden yellow, not overly brown or too dark. The cutting is uncommonly nice for these and the gem is absolutely loupe clean - the result being a very fine example of this scarce material. We get very few this nice that are of a good size for center stones - clean stones are often much larger in fact.
