Unquestionably one of the great gem rarities, transparent gem Dumortierite. Typically, when one encounters this species, it is in the form of very small, heavily included stones from decades-old Brazilian finds. The Brazilian stones can be brown, blue or anything in-between. In the last few years we have very occasionally seen a few faceted examples from the unusual locale of Mogok, Burma. What set these stones apart is, firstly, there potential size as they are much much larger than the Brazilian stones. Secondly is the unique color; a kind of medium purple-brown that is very distinctive. While there are even some clean African stones found from time to time, this color remains uniquely Burmese. This lovely stone is the largest and cleanest of these that we have seen - a gorgeous stone of nearly 2 1/2 carats. Well cut and nearly entirely clean (a few short needles near one end), we cannot overstate the rarity of gem Dumortierite of this quality. One of the few ‘rare gem species that is extremely hard and durable and suitable for jewelry and certainly a magnificent example. With GIA lab report.
