Malaya is an intermediate Garnet species that is defined both by its refractive index range and its color. The name derives from its inability to fit into the standard Garnet classification - its most frequent translation is 'outcast'. This is, unfortunately, a very overused term in the marketplace as actual examples that deserve the Malaya name are quite scarce. This lovely stone is a gorgeous example, completely clean and finely cut as a precision portuguese cushion. This is from the fairly recent finds of this material at Mahenge; the color will shift a bit towards a more orange-red modifier in artificial light. Excellent size and quite scarce.
