Named for a famed American geologist, Powellite is a quite rare calcium molybdate mineral. Prior to discoveries in India, it was almost unheard of in single crystal sizes large enough to cut a stone. It is rather soft at around 4 on the Moh’s scale, but has very high optical properties and an adamantine luster. All of these make it attractive to collectors of rare gems materials and, as most of this came out many years ago now, we don’t often see nice examples. Entirely clean, totally colorless and with a very respectable cut this one is a fine example indeed. Some nice flashes of visible dispersion are noted - the first fine example we have had in quite some time. exceptional stone from a fascinating and now long gone locality for Calcite - Rosarito Beach, Mexico. Orange is not a common color for gemmy Calcite from any deposit and we only have had a few, but few as large as the present example. Gorgeous precision cutting and entirely clean, the gem is beyond brilliant and bright. Furthermore, it is highly fluorescent as these tend to be. A truly fine and gorgeous stone that will delight.
