These fascinating stones join together the distinctive violet-blue of Iolite with reflective platelets of hematite. This is a gorgeous example; the color of the Iolite is great, the platelets are oriented superbly well and the size is very impressive. In fact, that was the goal in cutting this one; a large, bold stone with an emphasis on ‘sunstone’ look. The Iolite has a fine color but is not entirely transparent in this example so it was well suited to a large, broad stone where pavilion depth wasn’t really a concern. The reflected colors are, as you would hope, quite dazzling and even when in non-reflecting light, the look is attractive and intriguing.
