Examples of this rather intensely colored translucent opal are instantly recognizable for their color - such fine material comes only, to our knowledge, from Peru. High quality, larger gems are scarce to be sure - small, clean stones can be had but any fine example over a carat or carat is actually relatively scarce. Remember that opal has a low specific gravity, so this stone at 8.2 mm, facing up even larger than its 1.56 ct. weight. Probably the finest stone of this size we have had - the color is particularly blue dominant and there are none of the ‘speck’ type inclusions we typically see.
