An interesting gemological story, this material was for years identified as 'Poldervaartite' in rare stones circles. Originating in the Manganese fields of South Africa, the separation can only be done with intensive analysis as it depends on the ratio of Mn over Ca - Mn dominant is Olmiite. It seems from most sampling that nearly all the specimens and rough previously given as Poldervaartite (Ca dominant) are, in fact, the other way round. Adding to the difficulty is that the two are a series, so it is entirely possible to move from one species to the other within the same specimen, or stone! For either species, this is a nicely done example - excellent transparency with no distractions and a nicely cut round. Classic color for these.
