A large and fine example of an extremely rare faceted species that was recently (Fall 2019) profiled in the lab notes section of GIA’s Gems & Gemology. Meaning ‘snow stone’ in Greek, the name reflects the white to colorless nature of the mineral. Fully transparent material is exceptionally rare and this is the by far the largest and finest we have had, or seen for that matter. It is a collector’s gem with a hardness of just 3 1/2 on the Moh’s scale. The GIA profile can be found here.
