A well known rarity among collectors, Haüyne is famed for it's stunning blue bodycolor. A completely natural shade, it is among the most saturated of blues (almost an electric shade) possible in the gem world. Though first described in samples from Mt. Vesuvius in Italy, most gem Haüyne comes from the Eifel District of Germany, where is has been collected for many decades, mostly on weekends by local rockhounds. The gems are notoriously small and some of the largest examples known barely break the carat mark.
Of note in the last year or so has been the verified discovery of gemmy Haüyne in Afghanistan. Of similar color, the stones are considerably larger, though overwhelmingly more included than the German pieces. This offers a nice opportunity to get this species, in this color, at much higher weights and lower costs than has ever been possible. One thing to watch for it that much of the rough in the market has seem some degree of treatment. Rest assured, these have been soaked and testing and are in as natural a state as you should expect. Fun, large piece with superb color.
