1.27 ct. Sri Lankan Purple Taaffeite

Color:  Medium Dark Very Slightly Pinkish-Purple Clarity:  Eye Clean
Origin:  Sri Lanka Cut:  Pear Brilliant
Treatments:  None Measurements:  9.7 x 5 mm

Taaffeite is perhaps the most well known and most recognized of the very rare gem species.  Despite being found in several locales worldwide, there is never more than a trickle of these on the market at any time - and far too few to satisfy demand.  It is among the very few of the great rarities that is completely suited to jewelry use - durable and quite hard.

Two attributes help to set this gem apart from even those few available - the color and fine cutting.  Taaffeites tend to be largely desaturated colors - very muddy browns or purplish grays.  A stone with an attractive medium purple bodycolor, just touched with a pink modifier, is scarce indeed.  Given the rarity and per carat price of these, 'native' cuts have also long been the norm - saving weight by sacrificing shape and brilliance.  Again, not the case at all here - a US cut, precision job we simply can't overstate the rarity of such a superbly cut Taaffeite.  You are quite literally likely to find a dozen mixed ovals (or more!) for every one gem of this quality.  Add to this the extremely respectable size and the full GIA cert that accompanies the stone and you have a top quality, jewelry ready rarity that is among the top range for the entire species.
