The same area around Merelani, Tanzania that is noted for producing Tanzanite is also the source of these lively mint green Grossular garnets - hence the popular name of 'Merelani Mint' in the trade.  Mint grossulars are exceptional gems in all respects - great color, superb durability and, crucially, in terms of rarity.  This gem is many hundreds of times rarer than the finest Tsavorite of comparable size.  And it certainly appears that they have now gained the respect they deserve; there has been a dramatic upward swing in the price of these in the last few years.  Some sources now list gem rough at nearly $60 per carat - that translates into at least $500/ct for finished stones!

$250 / carat - $387 total
