The same area around Merelani,
Tanzania that is noted for producing Tanzanite is also the source of these
lively mint green Grossular garnets - hence the popular name of 'Merelani Mint'
in the trade. Mint grossulars are exceptional gems
in all respects - great color, superb durability and, crucially, in terms of
rarity. This gem is many hundreds of times rarer than the finest Tsavorite of
comparable size. And it certainly appears that they have now gained the respect
they deserve; there has been a dramatic upward swing in the price of these in
the last few years. Some sources now list gem rough at nearly $60 per carat -
that translates into at least $500/ct for finished stones!
