3.41 ct. Iranian Anhydrite

Origin:  Iran Cut:  Freeform Step
Treatments:  None Measurements:  15.4 x 5.6 mm

To say that Anhydrite is an uncommon species would be an understatement. Almost all facet grade material traditionally came from one of three areas - Canada, Switzerland or Germany.  This is the first example of faceted Anhydrite we have encountered from Iran and it is extremely impressive to say the least.  Firstly, the size is extraordinary - Canadian and German stones (colorless) were generally small and the Swiss stones (purple) could be 2 carats, but were often included.  This is nothing short of huge for the species and is both very clean and well cut - remember that great care must be taken as the Moh's hardness of Anhydrite is around 3 1/2.

The color is extremely pleasing as well, a purplish pink that is somewhat lighter and brighter than the specimens from Switzerland.  Simply a superb example of the species and the only stone we have seen close to this quality from this locale.  A special piece.
