14.43 ct. Brazilian Montebrasite
It was a great surprise to find such a fine example of faceted Montebrastite recently. Both the size and cutting are extremely impressive here - a large gem of over 14 carats and a superb custom square cushion shape. Montebrastite (and the closely related Amblygonite - see below) are rarely found so nice - the color here is a lovely light greenish-yellow, very diagnostic for the species. Brilliant and bright, this is a dazzling gem.
This stone comes from the well known
mining area of Itinga in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Though the
separation of Amblygonite and Montebrasite is difficult (they are a
solid-solution series), this deposit has had extensive analytical work to
determine the actual percentage of material that is Amblygonite vs. Montebrasite.
