9.10 ct. New Mexico Kelly Mine Smithsonite

Color:  Medium Bluish-Green Clarity:  Translucent
Origin:  Kelly Mine, near Magdalena, New Mexico Cut:  Custom Shield
Treatments:  Heat Measurements:  15.4 x 10 mm

It has been some time since we have been able to offer one of these spectacular US Smithsonites.  The Kelly Mine, near Magdalena, New Mexico, is one of the most famous deposits of Smithsonite in the world.  The mine has produced many world class Smithsonite mineral specimens, notable for both their startling forms and their lovely color.  The distinct green-blue of Smithsonite from this locality is essentially unique.

As with most deposits that are best known for producing specimens, it is uncommon to find facet grade rough on the market - if a piece has specimen potential, it is rarely ever 'sacrificed' for cutting.  Well, we are certainly glad that this piece made it to the cutter, it is a superbly cut gem with that glorious color.  The polish us superb and the luster it has brought out is wonderful.  The level of transparency is almost startling, it is fully translucent which allows light to entire and diffuse throughout - the result of this is a somewhat ethereal glow to the piece.  Gorgeous.
